The Torbrau, Munich's oldest hostelry, has been offering a warm welcome to guests since 1490. Its location is excellent: a short walk down the Tal from Marienplatz, the attractive, five-story, terra-cotta colored building with red-tiled roof sits on a corner in the heart of Munich at the historic Isator (originally one of Munich's main tower gates). The Kirchlechner family, who have owned the hotel for over a hundred years, are always making subtle changes to keep abreast of the times. Rooms range in size from snug singles to spacious doubles, which I personally prefer over the two-room suites. The six deluxe double rooms and the three suites offer air conditioning and the great majority of the rooms overlook a quiet side street. Tradition meets modern functionality. The individually furnished rooms are all equipped with bath/shower, WC, ISDN telephone, cable-TV, pay-TV, radio, computer and fax modem, safe and hair dryer. Minibar and coffee making facilities are free of charge in all deluxe double rooms and suites. All suites have air conditioning and modern bathrooms. Non smoking rooms are available in all categories. Breakfast is served each morning in an especially attractive dining room with a balcony overlooking the street. It is included in the rate. At 11 am this room converts to a tea room where a stunning selection of scrumptious pastries, fresh from the hotel's own bakery, is served. In summer the hotel's Italian restaurant sets up tables and chairs outside, a delightful place to dine and people watch. Parking is available beside the hotel. |
